The worker's bastion which ruled the roost once upon a time before the mill worker's strike in 1981 is now being slowly transformed into a concrete coglomerate. Lower Parel, Senapati Bapat Marg, Tulsi Pipe Road, Ganpatrao Kadam Marg and Sun Mill Lane which at one time reverbated with the clitter and clatter of thousands of looms and spindles from various mills are now prime property for builders and realtors. With the closing down of the mills, the charm of central Mumbai was lost and thousands of unemployed mill workers migrated to their villages. It was then a god-send grabbing opportunity for the land-sharks.

Central Mumbai also encompasses Matunga - the epitome of knowledge. Within a radius of about 4 square kilometers, there are twenty five nationally renowned educational institutions and colleges, prominent amongst them being the Victoria Jubilee Technical institute (VJTI) and the University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT). Innumerable number of scientists, architects, computer engineers, lawyers, journalists and high ranking government officials have had their schooling and college education in Matunga. The knowledge acquired from their alma mater have seen them shine and rise to unimaginable levels.
